The Cotillion

A Memento

Learn dancing, greetings, table sets
Talking skills null and void
Lacking
Words like hello, please, and thank you
Take a back seat to sass
Slick talk

Social education for kids
Grace, respect, etiquette
Manners
Timeless skills to carry you through
Being a lady, young
Man too

A cotillion is an event for the youth, ages 11-13. It teaches manners, how to conduct yourself in public situations. Social skills that help them build confidence and conversation skills. Also, how to properly set the table, ballroom dance too. Young girls and boys learn etiquette that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Valuable skills to learn.

I am not sure if cotillions still exist, but it needs to come back. Sadly, too many of the youth of today are disrespectful and lack essential social skills.

The Cotillion is written in response to the prompt. Thank you for reading🙏🏽💕

Black Love Day

Mama Ayo made Black Love Day
February 13th
Kings Queens

Commemorate love, family
Self, people, don't forget
Show heart

Thank you to my readers for stopping by. The poem Black Love Day is to highlight a day that was founded in 1993. The woman who started this day is D.C. native, Ayo Handy-Kendi aka Mama Ayo.

Black Love Day is about loving the creator, love for self, love of family, the black community and the people. It is a day to spread love to each other, no matter your race. Also, this day seeks to stop violence and racism.

You can share your stories and experiences with the black community on your social media platform. Write about the things that you admire and any positive reflection that is personal to you. Positivity is the general theme and purpose of the day.

Some ways to celebrate the day are to connect with the culture, strengthen relationships with each other. Uplift a loved one, support black-owned businesses and/or causes. Wear purple and black to show your solidarity.

February 13th is also an alternative to Valentine’s Day. Show your loved ones, family, friends and lovers just how special they are by spending time and showing your love, in a way that is uniquely you.

The day is less than a month away. Look out for different activities in your area. How will you celebrate?

Shaping of a New Year

A triolet

Finally a new year is here
With everything you have hold on tight
New goals and ambitions appear
Finally a new year is here
Stopping old habits the slate will clear
Just as day turns into night
Finally a new year is here
With everything you have hold on tight

Place of Peace, Interrupted

As I write this, I am thinking about everything going on in the world right now and in the recent past. Too many people are senselessly losing their lives, and for what? People who feel that they are more powerful than you. People who feel that we are not worthy of life on this earth. The same way they are living and breathing; we have the right to be here too. The world is in chaos and a lot of us are experiencing unrest. Any semblance of peace, fading away. It is a sad state of affairs.

I can go on, but I think from the poem, you get where I am going with my sentiments. The price of peace should not be this expensive. Such a simple concept seems like too much to ask. Peace looks different for all of us. Be it 10 minutes alone with your thoughts, a one-hour nap, 20 minutes of meditation or cherished time with loved ones. Maybe, a day of not having to look over your shoulder in fear of being snatched up on the street.

Thank you for taking the time to read the post. My hope is that sooner rather than later, things will look up. I know in my heart that better days are to come. Prayer is always bigger than any problem.

Stay well and be blessed🙏🏽💞

Sun In My Pocket

Sun In My Pocket

Searching out the window
Wonder catches me
Where oh where is sunshine
Cloud after cloud careening
Patiently, I stand by
Oh wait, what's this
Feeling warmth and joy
Reaching in my pocket
Oh, there you are
Sun in my pocket

Thank you for stopping by to read!

Imagine, finding the sun in your pocket! It would be a pleasant and welcome surprise on those cloudy days☀

Sun In My Pocket was written in response to the W3 weekly prompt. The guideline for this prompt is to write a poem of 10 lines or fewer that places someone—or something—in a delightfully improbable location. Think sharks in a bathtuba dragon in a bar, or any unexpected presence where it clearly doesn’t belong.

Birth of the Lamb

The date is fuzzy
December, January
The birth, the lamb born
Twenty fifth or the seventh
Depends on what you believe

Tempered Sentiments

Tempered Sentiments- a Poem

Virtuous woman, what
A thing of the past
Resolve, compassion, dignity, and the like
Dissolving over time
Into the abyss

Softness given freely
Hearts willing to give
Discarded, taken for granted, time again
The point of no return
Is when she says, No

Get out my face and go
Softness gone, heart shut
Willing, no longer, spent are days in limbo
Virtuous she remains
Now, the wall is up

Check out Delicate Flower, She Be

Thank you all for taking the time to read my poem. 🙏🏽

The Phenomenal Growth of Hip Hop

The Phenomenal Growth of Hip Hop-a poem

What started in 1973
arguably
a new era of sound
you might say lyrics abound
origins up for debate
words used to create
break dancing, beat boxing, pop lockin'
on any corner, people rockin'
was it the Bronx, Manhattan or Queens?
who had the biggest influence
does it really matter, I mean
all are cities and cultures of affluence

Two small words, hip hop
its legacy lives on
a culture rising from some of the greats
Kurtis Blow and The Breaks
Kool Herc rode around with those speakers
Rock Dis Funky Joint, with Poor Righteous Teachers

Sugar Hill Gang was a Rapper’s Delight
don't forget Public Enemy Don’t Believe the Hype
Boogie Down Productions, You Must Learn
KRS One said it best
Check the Rhime with A Tribe Called Quest

Keeping it Strictly Business with EPMD
Eric B & Rakim said Check Out My Melody
How Many Mics does it take by the Fugees
This Can’t Be Life said Beans, Scarface and Jay Z
Lauryn Hill sings Selah
while MC Lyte raps in Cha Cha Cha

De La Soul said Stakes is High
and Queen Latifah sings U.N.I T.Y.
all I’m trying to say is it doesn’t matter
if you are in a NY State of Mind like Nas
or if you Stand Tall with Rapsody
let’s not forget, Mobb Deep, RIP Prodigy

Hip hop is here to stay
it feels like it started just yesterday
Tupac wrote an anthem Dear Mama
and Notorious BIG was Big Poppa
the music ain’t Slippin' spit DMX
which artist do you think got next?

Thank you for stopping by to read. 💖

Where Is My Home?

Where Is My Home?

An Etheree

Psst
Hey you
Help, I'm lost
Where is my home
It is no longer
Bulldozed, trampled, gone
How can us fawns find safety
Where will we find food and shelter
Can we sleep in your backyard tonight
We have nowhere else to go, help us please

The poem, Where Is My Home? is written for WDYS prompt #312.

The Notebook

The Notebook- a Triolet
A Triolet

The notebook goes with the pen in my hand
Where thoughts come to life
From my head on to paper they land
The notebook goes with the pen in my hand
Laughter, grief, triumphs all stand
Emotions cut deep like a knife
The notebook goes with the pen in my hand
Where thoughts come to life

The original poem, The Notebook was written in response to the W3 prompt.

Abstract As Can Be

Look
in the
picture frame
anything from
clown butterfly mask
imagine interpret
colors shapes media too
name it what you will, eyes leading
shaping the mind, altering it too
causing the face to smile in wonder, wow
excitement takes over, positive thoughts
abound, flooding your mind with questions
complex linear abstract mute
watercolor oil finger
paint possibilities
what is this image
fun or scary
obtuse or
even
sad

Flutter, Flutter

Flying high and low
Landing for a peek inside
Unique beings and places
Telling their stories
Tantalizing hues of light
Ethereal I appear to some
Reassuring, you are not alone

Flutter, Flutter is an original poem written in response to the picture prompt by Sadje.

Posture Me Blue

Posture Me Blue

Posture me blue
Sitting arms at side
Bored to tears, statuesque
Striking movement in stride
Bending at the waist
Derriere and floor become one
Arm cradling head
Exhale stress and dread
Chin pressed to chest
Relaxed, I posture, rest
My birthday suit at its best
Relaxed, I imbue serene
Posture me blue

Posture Me Blue is written in response to the word prompt.
