Isle Of Enchantment; Summer Trip

Isle of Enchantment is written about my first visit to Puerto Rico.

2013 was the year, in the month of July, my oh my
One of the hottest months to travel, by and by
A scorcher, nonetheless, I had a blast
Finally made it to my father’s place of birth, at last

In the summer we can be lively or carefree and idly
The humidity can hit you like a wet rag in the face
Enchanted Island of Puerto Rico is the place
Clothes clinging to the skin, feeling sticky and intense

Deplaning in San Juan the weather warm, humid and sunny
Cute, Burgundy, patent leather bag, or patent pleather
Is no match for the tropical, summer and blistering weather
A better choice would have been canvas, jute, or linen

Cruising through breezy Loiza and the beach, Isla Verde
Next day in Old San Juan taking in a refreshing piragua
Sitting and taking in the scene like a movie premiere
People coming and going enjoying carefree tropical living

Street vendors amass with food to seduce the palette
Fried codfish, aka Bacalaitos
Alcapurria, deep fried fritter with meat
And Empanadas filled with beef

Drinks that I never had before were enticing
Mavi for one, made from tree bark
Coquito, made with rum, condensed, coconut milk and spices
Coco Rico, a coconut flavored soda

Alluring me with its sound, the native frog, a Coqui
Serenading me at night, while calling out during the day
Music soothing the ears, the body and soul
People friendly making me feel right at home

Beautiful pastel-colored structures
At every turn, beaming with pride
Colors, sounds, people, food
The heartbeat of Puerto Rico

El Morro is the next adventure, such colossal grounds
History is tapping my shoulder as I explore
Too much ground to cover, the fort is too big
Have to plan this visit in more than one gig

Off to dance the night away at an outdoor restaurant
The wind current keeps us semi-cool
No matter, the music gets the feet and body moving
In rhythm, I dance till the music stops

Cascading friendliness and genuine warmth
Something that will remain in memory
The summer of 2013 is kept in rich treasury
Of my mind, now comes time to go forth

Heading back home with such vivid scenery
Surreal trip that will last like well-oiled machinery
The pictures, a keepsake for nostalgic moments
Summer of 2013

Panhandling Days in the Rearview

Panhandling Days in the Rearview

Driving by this corner
My eyes tear up like morning dew
I used to live here
Harsh nights, cold mornings
Even while I had no place to call home
Love and kindness resided in my heart
Now that an abode has found me
Sometimes the echoes of the street
Ring in my ears during the nightfall
Scrounging and scraping for loose change
Fallen from past days, reduced to panhandling
Now that an abode has saved me
I still cherish pieces of me from those fallen days

Trendy; but Tricky

Palazzo pants
palazzo pants, cute
wind blew, from bus to curb, butt
flopped on the concrete

Trendy; but Tricky is written for the Tanka Tuesday challenge hosted by Melissa. She invites us to have fun and experiment with haiku.

The poem I wrote is based on a true story. Back in the day, in the 90s I had on Palazzo pants. It was a cute two-piece set. So, I thought I was cute until… getting off the bus, the wind blew my pants and tripped me. I fell right on the curb where my butt met the concrete. It hit me that I fell in front of all the passengers on the bus and people in the establishment at the stop.

Just imagine, strutting your strut then the embarrassment brings you back to reality. At least the bus driver asked me if I was okay. I saw him fighting back his laugh as he drove off. A funny memory indeed. Trendy but tricky, beware. 😁

As always, thank you for visiting! 💖🙏🏽

Fading Capacity of the Mind

Fading Capacity of the Mind

Walk in the den
I need my book
Now, in the room
I ask...
What brought me here?
Train of thought gone
Bam!
Just that fast, I forgot

For this week’s W3 challenge, writers are invited to capture a dramatic moment in just a handful of lines — a storm breaking, a glass shattering, a door slamming, a sudden realization, or any instant where something changes sharply or unexpectedly.

I chose to write about the realization that my mind is not what it used to be. Just that quick, I forgot why I was going in the other room and what I needed. The aging mind has jokes; it likes to play tricks. Enjoy it while you can! If this sounds like you, just know you are not alone😃

losing weight, a chore
watching my figure, ho hum
my jeans are fitting
wow, smiling, happy to see
gotta love those genes of mine

Figment: or My Imagination

Figment; or My Imagination

Figment; or My Imagination is a poem about a parent who is grieving the loss of a child. The child comes to them in a dream, but it seems so real. After the dream is over, the parent is wondering if the child really appeared?

Dear child where have you gone
Dear child it's been way too long
Missing you, morning, noon, night
Longing for the return of your light

Light in your contagious smile
Light in your warm touch
Light in your healing words
Light in your steady gaze

Keep your eyes shut, fear not
My smile- contagious still bright
My touch- warm is just right
My words- healing ever so light
My gaze- steady no longer tight

Dear child have I conjured fantasy
Is my imagination out on a tangency
Eyes now open still in a dream
Mind deceives me to the extreme

Mine to have, a dream is a dream
Flowing through my bloodstream
For me to keep for a lifetime
The aura of you is so sublime

Thank you for stopping by to read! 🙏🏽💗

Connection; or Needs

A Garland Cinquain

Connect
a human need
can you give me a call
we can talk shop, laugh, reminisce
Connect

Lunch date
can we break bread
let's grab some food, Cocktails
top it with a cute umbrella
Connect

Now that
we are happy
our being full of glee
doesn't it feel good to get out
Connect

Life is
a masquerade
an excursion of sorts
so full of possibilities
Fickle

We can
complain and moan
lock it in a chokehold
or show life what we came to do
Flourish

Connect
can we break bread
our being full of glee
so full of possibilities
Flourish

Connection; or Needs is a garland cinquain poem, written for the Tanka Tuesday challenge. Robbie is the host for this week, and she has asked us to write a story:

This week I am asking you to write a story poem that includes a beginning, middle and ending. Your poem should have a minimum of three stanzas but can have more if you prefer.

The story poem that I wrote is about the basic need of human connection. Just a simple telephone call or lunch get-together can be enough to fill that need. My first attempt at writing this style of poetry; apologies if it is not correct. I enjoyed experimenting and writing it, nonetheless.

Carved Corner

I can be at home
Just being all alone
Or feeding my brain
Breaking the mundane

Books piled from floor to ceiling
I’m in heaven, oh what a feeling
Abundance of choices, can I pick a genre
Something exciting like maybe a crime drama

No, crime fiction I meant
Getting the juices flowing
Carve me a corner
By the window, much warmer

Sun shining onto the pages
Aiding through those dull stages
Parts of the story already told
Scenes we can skip over

Carved corner all my own
Selfishly unwilling to share
Bound stories from cover to cover
Curiosity I wish to discovery

Carved Corner is written for the WDYS prompt by Sadje.

Thank you for spending time with my poem! 💞🙏🏽

Update-Debut Poem on Spillwords

My first poem is now published on Spillwords. The title is, If Only I Could. It is about a first-time mom who is afraid. She questions her ability to adequately care for her child.

A snippet of the poem:

We haven’t officially met
I just knew from the onset
How special you would be
If only I could

Through The Narrow Lens

Through The Narrow Lens

Through the narrow lens
is a big bad world
take a step back
sit for a minute
absorb
assess
process
the ways of denizens
in the big bad world
hurrying, night and day
bumping shoulders
not breaking stride

Through the narrow lens
we venture to the street
no clear destination
evaporation into the night

Thank you for stopping by to read my poem, Through the Narrow Lens! 💞

I drew inspiration from the prompt for WDYS by Sadje. Thank you as always for the prompts each week.

Hanging Onto Ifs

Questions of uncertainty
Hanging onto ifs
Restricts growth
It constrains

Hanging onto ifs
Breeds uncertainty
And doubt

Hanging onto ifs
Robs you of exploration
Stalls curiosity

Hanging onto ifs
Builds rifts
Stalls shifts in creativity
Takes all the lifts out of the sails

Hanging onto ifs
Can foster inner tiffs
Let go of the ifs

It helps to sift
Sift away fears and doubts
Lift hope and confidence

Let go of the ifs

The poem, Hanging Onto Ifs is about how our mind plays on us. It can let doubt creep in and stop us from pursuing our dreams. We question ourselves and ask, “what if it doesn’t work?” Well, what if it does. Injecting hopeful thoughts and believing in ourselves is a positive alternative.

The mind is very powerful, and it is important that we guard our thoughts. Every action starts with a thought. If we question and overthink, it stalls growth.

What do you think about the what ifs?

Sweet Slumber

A Tricube

step inside
feel the vibe
calm imbibe

guard let down
blissfully
pillow bound

eyes closing
rest ensues
start the snooze

Sweet Slumber is about that moment you get home from a rough day. All you want to do is get some sleep. No longer on the clock, you can just let go and hit the bed. Let the snoozing begin.

The Tanka Tuesday host this week is Willow, who has tasked us with the challenge to write a tricube poem.

You can write your Tricube poem in as many multiples of three-line stanzas as you wish. Please pick your moment and write about your feelings. A word of advice don’t overthink the moment let your words flow.

Thank you all for stopping by to read and thank you Willow for the prompt. 🙏🏽💕

No Need for Name Calling

No Need for Name Calling

An Etheree

Knock
Who's there?
Tap, tap, tap
Tap tap tap who?
Knock, knock, tap, tap, bam
Who's that rapping my door?
Knock, knock, tap, tap, bam, bam, ding
Pressing the doorbell again, dong
Trodding to the door, you yell, coming!
Just open the door already, Ding Dong!

Robbie invites us to write a poem using onomatopoeia for this week’s Tanka Tuesday challenge. I tried to add some humor to this one about someone knocking at the door. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy it!😊 And thank you, Robbie, for your inspiration. 🙏🏽💕
